Shortly after the founding of Southampton in 1640, settlers began to move east to the area known by the Shinnecock Indians as Sagaponack and Mecox. At the head of Sagg Pond the Pilgrims established a settlement called Bullhead. It was later renamed Bridgehampton after the bridge was built across the pond, and now has a year-round population of 1,381.
During the summer and fall, farm stands display their bountiful harvests. There are horse farms, tennis and golf, as well as local beaches. Bridgehampton is also home to one of the foremost vineyards: Channing Daughters Winery. Of special interest in the summer is the Hamptons Classic horse show, the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge, the chamber music festival, and the antique shows.
The Children's Museum of the East End, on the Bridgehampton turnpike, was founded by Alan and Arlene Alda. CMEE captures the history, beauty and treasures of the entire East End.
