Montauk is the easternmost hamlet in the Hamptons, at the very tip of Long Island. It is considered to be one of the premiere ocean front resorts in the world. It was formed over 100 million years ago during the last great Ice Age and has some of the most spectacular rocks that jut out along the seacoast.
It was well known for its history of fishing fleets and the harbor continues to be full of vessels that come and go from commercial fishing expeditions. Montauk is not only a commercial fishing hub but because of the rocky shore formation it is a favorite spot for sport fishermen and surfers. It now has a year-round population of 3,851. It covers a 19.8-mile area, 11.53% of which is water.
Montauk is bordered by Block Island Sound on the north and the Atlantic Ocean on the south. Standing out from a promontory is the famous Montauk Lighthouse, built in 1796 as a beacon to guide ships and guard them against running ashore. This well-known lighthouse is the oldest in the United States and the 4th oldest operating in the States today.
